REQUIREMENTS:

The United States Heritage Award was designed by Scouts and Adults to give recognition for learning about the heritage of the United States of America. By completing this award, it is hoped that participants will not only increase their understanding of the United States, but also foster a greater sense of patriotism through service in local communities.

The award may be earned by any youth in the United States (you don't need to be a Scout). A medal and patch can be awarded to each youth that successfully completes the requirements for the award. All requirements may be completed with a unit, group, family, or individually.

The silver medal is for youth 6-10, and the gold medal is for youth 11-18. Adults may earn the gold medal.

SILVER REQUIREMENTS
Youth 6-10 years old

1. Tell when the Declaration of Independence was signed.

2. Learn the first verse of "The Star Spangled Banner"

3. Know the Pledge of Allegiance. Explain what it means.

4. Learn about the United States Flag

a. What colors does the Flag have?
b. How many stars, and what do they symbolize?
c. How many stripes, what are their colors, and what do they symbolize?
d. How do you show respect for the flag?


5. Make a list of the thirteen original States.

6. Who is the President?

7. Do one of the following:

a. Write a short story or poem about one of the following:

i. Why America is Special to Me
ii. What It Means To Be Free
iii. If I Were President

b. Draw a picture of a famous person in American History and tell what they did.

8. Render a service that benefits a neighborhood or community.

GOLD REQUIREMENTS
Youth 11-18 years and Adults

1. Tell when the Declaration of Independence was signed.

2. Tell when the Constitution was signed.

3. Know the first two verses of "The Star Spangled Banner". Tell who wrote it and when.

4. Know and explain the Pledge of Allegiance.

5. The United States Flag:

a. List what each of the 13 stripes represents.
b. What was different about the Flag from 1795 - 1818. Why was it changed?
c. Explain 3 proper ways to display the Flag.
d. Tell how to show respect for the Flag.

6. Do one of the following:

a. Find out what the parts of the flag are called and draw a picture showing the following:

i. Canton, Fly, Field or Ground, Fly End, Hoist, Finial, Flag Staff, Grommet, Peak, Union, Truck, Halyard

b. Write a short story or poem about one of the following:

i. Why America is Special to Me
ii. What It Means To Be An American
iii. What It Means To Be Free
iv. If I Were President

7. Make a list of the 50 States

8. Name the current President, Vice-President, and Speaker of the House

9. Name your State's two Senators and the Representatives from your Congressional District

10. Render a service that benefits a neighborhood or community.

ADULT REQUIREMENT ONLY (Gold 1-10 above, plus:)

11. Assist a youth in earning the Heritage Award.
